4 Ways to Make Your Wedding Good for the World
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle…the saying goes well for your wedding too! So many people are looking into being more eco-friendly, and there are a lot of ways to do so. Read along and see our best recommendations for making your wedding better for the world.
1. Rent. Rent. Rent.
Most people use rentals for their wedding on big items, like tables, tents and chairs. But there are a lot of other ways to rent for your wedding. Use a service like Rent the Runway for your bridesmaid’s dresses. The fashion industry creates immense amounts of waste every year, and bridesmaids’ dresses are a one-time wear. Renting cuts down on cost for your bridal party and helps the environment too. Not only can you rent dresses, but jewelry as well! There’s nothing like a gorgeous outfit that’s sustainable, too.
2. Less Is More.
Weddings require so many single-use items that will never be recycled. Lush florals cascading throughout your reception space are pleasing to the eye, but are they good for the environment? Not so much. Flowers from weddings are usually thrown away that night, only to be used for a few hours. Opt for less (reduce!) and see your wedding budget grow. Use that extra money for experiences at your wedding, rather than more things like décor.
3. Buy Intentionally.
When you do go to buy items for your wedding, look into buying from more sustainable, eco-friendly companies. Dig deep when looking, and don’t just go with the first option you find. See if they talk about how they reduce waste or recycle materials. To save some time, look for businesses to patron that are a Certified B Corporation. A certified B-Corp is required to hold high standards in business, environmentally and socially, with a certain level of public transparency and legal accountability. This is a great place to start when looking for more sustainable businesses and products!
4. Donate or Re-sell.
For the items you must buy, find ways to donate or re-sell them, giving someone else a chance to enjoy them! You cut down on products and waste being created, helping the environment, and allow others to buy the items knowing they’re also a part of making the world a better place.
You can have your cake and eat it too when buying sustainably-made products, renting where you can, opting for less single-use items, and donating or re-selling the items you buy! It’s not always easy but entirely worth it when it comes to making this world a better place. Of course, having fewer in-person guests can help with a lot of this! Be sure to plan to include a virtual wedding as part of your event.
