What to Wear to a Virtual Wedding?
One of the most exciting parts (or worst parts, depending on how you look at it) of being a wedding guest is getting to put together a fancy outfit to wear while celebrating the union of your loved ones.
Considering that Google sees nearly 20,000 queries of “what to wear to a wedding?” each month, it’s no secret that many people just aren’t sure what’s appropriate for the event.
Rules for wedding guest outfits change literally by the minute, with the standard get-up for a wedding shifting depending on the time of the event. A morning spring wedding on April 25th will “require” a different outfit than an evening wedding on the same day, even if both weddings have the same dress code specs.
Of course, traditions, rules and requirements are ever-changing, with less emphasis on what “should” be worn than ever before. At the end of the day, wear what you feel good in. As long as you won’t upset the newlyweds (many brides still want to be the only one wearing white, for example, and many grooms don’t want to see their friends wearing a full tuxedo if they are in a more casual suit), then wear what feels right.
What to Wear to a Virtual Wedding
A newer concern about wedding attire has arisen along with the rise of virtual weddings, and that’s what do you wear when you’re watching a wedding on your couch? We have a few opinions.
First, if you’ll be on camera, such as if the couple is having a Zoom wedding reception, then you should dress similar to how you would if you were to be there in-person. You by no means need to buy a new outfit, but you might want to dress up a little bit out of respect for the significance of the event.
If you won’t be on camera, you can still dress up. After a year of being stuck inside the house with limited access to social events, it’s exciting to have a reason to dress up! If you won’t be on camera, you could even throw on your fanciest gown or nicest tux -- heck, you can even wear your own wedding dress or that old bridesmaid dress you thought you’d never wear again!
If you don’t feel like dressing up, that’s okay too! Make it a pajama party, or just wear what you were already planning to wear that day. You could also do the oh-so-classic business on top, party on the bottom with your coziest pair of sweatpants.
Virtual weddings are new – so thankfully, we’re getting to make up our own traditions with them. Whatever you choose to wear, be sure to let the couple know how excited you are to celebrate with them from afar!
