It’s Destination Wedding Season!
Wedding season is typically considered late spring through early fall, and that includes destination weddings. While destination weddings can happen year-round, they are especially popular around this time of year, when more people are able to take time off of work, the kids are almost out of school, and heading off on a little vacation sounds like a nice option, especially after a year of reduced travel.
This month, we are bringing you tons of destination wedding inspiration tips, whether you want to go to a tropical destination in the Caribbean or to a chilly locale in Iceland.
2021: The Year of Destination Weddings
2021 is going to be one of the busiest wedding seasons ever, with a good percentage of 2020 couples postponing to 2021, adding even more competition for venues and vendors.
Most notably, according to The Knot, just 9% of weddings in 2020 were destination weddings, down from 21% in 2019. This year, as many people are able to safely travel again, we expect destination weddings to return to a more prominent position, especially when you add in the high competition for local venues.
Where to Go:
How does one choose where to have their destination wedding? There are a few things to consider.
First, consider the purpose of the trip. Obviously, the main purpose is to get married. But you should also consider whether you want to spend tons of time relaxing by a pool, exploring ancient ruins or hiking in the mountains. Do you want to go somewhere with lots of dining and nightlife or somewhere off the beaten path? Do you want to stay at a resort the whole time or experience the destination like a local?
After you decide the purpose, consider things like busy travel seasons for the destinations you are considering. For example, Jamaica is incredibly popular during the winter because the weather is warm but not too hot, and it’s far from hurricane season. Meanwhile, Ireland might be frigid during the winter and lovely during the spring. Be sure to do plenty of research on seasonal weather in the areas on your list.
Finally, consider how difficult or easy it will be for your guests to join you. Traveling to Vancouver, Canada from Washington state is going to be easier than traveling to Greece, for example. If your guests don’t have passports, then choosing a location in the same country might mean more guests can make the trip.
